I Need Substance!

Before I start, I have to share.

This little photo I threw together last year has over 1800 views. I know that isn’t a ton but that just doesn’t happen to me. haha

My dad took this one of Will and me last Thanksgiving and it has over 6000. Go Dad! haha

I thought that was pretty cool. Anyway, on to what I wanted to post. =)

————————————————————————————————-

“Subscribe to my blog!”

“Follow my blog!”

“Add me to your reader!”

I am sure we have all said at least one of these before. I have definitely subscribed to plenty of blogs. I have followed many more. And I have tried to read them all because I do love reading blogs. However, I am busy and as much as you might not like me saying it…

Blogs are not that important to me compared to a lot of other things. I have this idea involving… I don’t know… living my life instead of reading about others’ all day. I love to read, but I simply can’t handle my reader looking like this every time I open it.

DON’T GET ME WRONG, NOW. I want you all to know that I have loved reading posts on all of the blogs I have in my reader. However, let’s face it: there are very few people that provide something interesting and worthwhile in every post . I know I haven’t in the past. That is why I have stopped blogging for the most part. I want my blog to be fueled by a purpose and not be something I do when I am bored. So, I wait until I can offer more to you all. The rest is written in a journal so that I don’t bother others with mindless nonsense.

Once again, I love reading blogs. I just like the posts to have substance. I like to be able to see some common thread tying all of the posts together. It could be fashion, food, art, photography, writing, etc. It doesn’t matter! I just don’t want to see a million random “fluff” posts on a blog that make me wonder where they came from. If you want to do that, go to Tumblr and I will follow you and you can show me all the awesome stuff other people have blogged that you like. haha (I haven’t quite explored Tumblr to it’s fullest, however, that is the general idea I have formed in my small personal experiences with it.)

Anyway, enough with the rambling. I have recently unsubscribed to all of the blogs in my reader. It was nothing personal; I just needed a fresh start. I also don’t have the time right now to go through the hundreds (I know… horrible) of blogs and figure out which stay and which go. So, I am reaching out to you.

Will you help me? If you know of a blog (or a few) that you genuinely think I would enjoy, please email me the link(s) so that I can check it out. Shameless self-promotion is ok, too. ;-) Make sure you leave a personal message so I know you aren’t spam. Maybe even let me in on why you do (or don’t) read my blog. It can only help me as I figure out how to make this place what I want it to be. You can email me at erinsundayphoto[at]gmail[dot]com.

One last thing, I am trying to work on a blog design but don’t have money to shell out to one of the places I can get a template. If someone is good at this stuff and wants to help me for free or trade, that would be great! (Yes, I am bartering… deal with it.)

Thanks, everyone! I truly love and am grateful for you all. :)

Love, Erin

  1. i totally agree with you. i’ve been unsubscribing like CRAZY to blogs lately {obvs. i’m still here, so, there’s a compliment for you}. i can’t stand blog posts of other peoples’ pictures with a little fluffy “this is what i want for Christmas” list. which is pretty much what the blogging community has become. i’ve been trying lately to just do my own thing, to treat the blog like a creative outlet. i want to write a book. i want to draw. i need…practise. and, sure, criticism and feedback. that’s why i blog. not to show you what i found on the internet today.

    • I am so happy you are still here! I love that you are a writer. I can’t see how you grow! :) Thank you for sticking around. I can’t tell you how much it is appreciated.

I actually really like tumblr. Mostly because it shows a tiny bit of all the blogs in one place and then I can click on the ones that look like something I’d want to read. I mostly only follow photography and fashion blogs ( for the photography) and then some tattoo ones for the pretty pictures as well. So what i’m getting at is use your tumblr more! I already follow you there and want to see you on my dashboard more

    • Ok, ok! I will use Tumblr more! I was actually thinking of using that as my photo blog and using this for personal posts. That way I keep the two separate. :) So, I guess it works out best that way! I didn’t mean to come off like Tumblr has no use. It has it’s place, I just haven’t been able to enjoy it like I feel I should. Regardless, you will see me around Tumblr more once I get my website up and going! :-)

Good decision! :) I did this at one point. I didn’t get rid of all the blogs, I just kept the ones that were inspiring, positive, and, as you said it, worthwhile :) I didn’t want to read them just because I was bored.

And I LOVE those photos. And I LOVE your tattoos! :)

    • Thank you. :) I always stew over my tattoo ideas for quite a bit before getting them. It does stay on me forever. ;-)

I am happy you continue to find your way here! I hope I am able to keep giving you something worth you time visited here. Thanks for being so supportive!

I just cleaned out my google reader recently too! It is so refreshing to only find a few new blogs to read each time I open it. I felt like I was spending so much time skimming blogs. I had the same feeling about how I would rather live a life than read about others. Also I feel like I can follow closer to those that I care about. Yours definitely stayed in my google reader though. :)

    Hope you are doing well!

    • Thank you, Carol. That means a lot. You are such a kind soul. :)

  5. I always have & will love your blog! the main reason is that you’re a personal friend and it’s always good to “catch up” which is why I still take the time (whenever I have a spare minute(s) here or there) to catch up on reader. :) I don’t leave nearly as many comments as I used to, but just knowing that my friends who I don’t get to see hardly ever are still out there and posting and enjoying life makes me HAPPY! :)

    • This made me SO happy! I love that you read. That is more important to me than comments. :)

I’m trying to understand what makes me want to follow a blog and what makes me want to unfollow a blog. I follow just over 150 right now and read about 3000 every month. It’s absolutely intimidating. I like the idea of unfollowing EVERYTHING and starting from scratch. Sometimes I feel like I’m link “hoarder” though and that may be to drastic for me. Thanks for this post and the reminder of substance. That’s a good word for what I’m looking for too.

PS. I like the mixture of photo content and personal on a blog… so I kind of vote against tumblr in that case.

    • Oh my goodness! That would be intimidating. Thank you for the feedback. I am so glad you like my blog! :)

i know exactly what you mean. it’s hard picking what you actually need to read and keep in touch with. there’s a balance there somewhere, and i think i found mine with bloglovin’.
i’m going to shamelessly promote it now: it’s great. and a great start if you’re starting from scratch. you can organize the blogs that you like in categories so that you can only read what you’ve got time for (your faves) or sift through the others whenever.
if you haven’t tried it yet, give it a go. it’s a lot prettier to look at too and gives you more options.
    here’s to better organization!

    p.s. you’ve got a lovely blog
